What Is ICM?

ICM (Independent Chip Model) converts tournament chips into monetary value. Unlike cash games where chips have a fixed value, tournament chips have diminishing marginal value — doubling your stack does not double your equity because you can only win first place once. ICM calculates the probability of finishing in each paid position and weights it by the prize money.

ICM is essential for late-game tournament decisions. A chip leader might decline a marginal all-in that would be a clear call in a cash game, because busting in second place when you are dominating the field represents a massive ICM error. Understanding ICM equity helps you make better push/fold decisions, negotiate deals, and avoid costly mistakes at the final table.
