How Each-Way Betting Works

An each-way bet is actually two separate bets: a WIN bet and a PLACE bet, each at the same stake. So a £10 each-way bet costs £20 total (£10 win + £10 place).

The win part pays out at the full odds if your selection finishes 1st. The place part pays out at a fraction of the odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5) if your selection finishes in the places.

Win return = Stake × Odds
Place return = Stake × ((Odds - 1) × Place Fraction + 1)
Total EW return (if wins) = Win return + Place return

If your horse wins, both parts pay out. If it finishes 2nd or 3rd (in a race paying 3 places), only the place part pays. If it finishes outside the places, you lose both bets.

Why Each-Way Betting Matters

Each-way betting is one of the smartest strategies in horse racing and golf betting. By paying for both a win and a place bet, you protect your stake if your selection finishes close but doesn't win outright.

The key to profitable each-way betting is finding horses at longer odds where the place terms offer genuine value. For example, a horse at 10/1 with 1/4 place terms gives you place odds of 5/2 (3.50 decimal). If you think the horse has a 30% chance of placing, those place odds represent excellent value.

Each-way accumulators are particularly powerful. The place part of the acca multiplies together independently, so even if not all selections win outright, you can still get a substantial return from the place acca as long as every selection places.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an each-way bet cost?
An each-way bet costs double your stake because it is two separate bets. A £10 each-way bet costs £20 (£10 for the win part + £10 for the place part).
What does 1/4 odds places mean?
It means the place part of your each-way bet pays at one quarter of the win odds. If the win odds are 8/1, the place odds are 2/1 (8 × 1/4 = 2). This is the most common place fraction in UK horse racing.
What happens in a dead heat?
In a dead heat, the payout is divided by the number of runners sharing the position. In a 2-way dead heat for 1st, your win returns are halved and the place part also pays at reduced terms.
What is Rule 4?
Rule 4 applies when a runner is withdrawn from a race after bets have been placed. It reduces the odds paid on remaining runners. The deduction depends on the price of the withdrawn horse, ranging from 5p to 90p in the pound.
Can I do each-way accumulators?
Yes. Switch to "Accumulator E/W" mode in the calculator above. In an each-way accumulator, the win odds and place odds are multiplied separately across all legs. Every selection must at least place for the place acca to pay.
